Get Back in the Game

Athletes risk injury no matter how cautious they are with pre-workout stretches and post-training cool downs. The relentless pounding of feet and legs on hard or irregular surfaces can result in strains, sprains, shin splints and tendonitis. Combining this jarring with the repetitive motions, increased loading forces, and the shearing stress of competitive sports and the consequence can be a traumatic injury, such as a tendon tear or bone fracture.

Did you know? The human foot and ankle has 33 joints, more than 100 tendons, ligaments, and muscles and 26 bones. In fact, one quarter of all the bones in your body are contained in just your foot and ankle, making it one of the most intricate and complex anatomical structures in your body! When you injure your foot or ankle during sports or exercise, seeing a podiatrist is the best and quickest way to avoid unnecessary pain and to address and heal your injury.

Tips for Preventing a Sports Foot Injury:

  • Follow a recognized and accepted training program.
  • When starting a new training program, begin slowly and gradually build up the amount and intensity of the activity.
  • Cross-train to build supporting muscles. By interchanging daily activities that achieve the same fitness goals, you decrease the chances of a stress fracture. For example, alternating biking and running will increase the strength of different leg muscles, giving you more foot and leg support and flexibility, and reducing the risk of injury.
  • Replace your work out shoes frequently.

As a responsible podiatrist, we recommend a thorough evaluation by a sports medicine podiatrist prior to beginning any training program.

We have been helping to keep professional athletes, adults, and children in top condition since 1981. We see patients from Delray Beach, Ft Lauderdale, Deerfield Beach, West Palm Beach, Boynton Beach, Miami, and throughout South Florida.
