Podiatry for Kids

The first year in a child’s life is very important in the development of their feet. Here are some common podiatry issues seen in children:

Ingrown Toenails – Due to the soft pliable nature of a child’s feet, ingrown toenails are a common occurrence and require treatment

Flat foot – If the child has a flat foot that is prone to rolling inward at the ankle, orthotics can correct impending issues

In-toe and out-toe walking – As children learn to walk, they can develop a tendency to walk with their toes pointed inwards or outwards. By age 2, most children will walk with their feet pointed straight ahead. A severe case on in-toe or out-toe walking may require treatment.

Toe walking – Another issue that is seen in children while learning to walk is a tendency to walk on their toes. Toe walking can be caused by neuromuscular conditions (such as cerebral palsy or muscular dystrophy) differences in leg length, spinal cord abnormalities and shortness of the achilles tendon. A mild shortness can be treated with stretching exercises and/or physical therapy may be necessary. If the toe walking is more severe or persistent, then consideration needs to be given to casting, botox injections or surgery. All cases of toe walking should be evaluated to rule out the causes other than just habit.
